After the excitement of yesterday today started much calmer. We had breakfast in the hotel, buffet style. It always amazes me with Americans and their breakfasts. How can anyone mix scrambled eggs with Danish pastries and ice cream on the same plate??????
We checked out and drove towards New Orleans. We took the same road we drove down the night before whilst looking for our hotel. The weather was better, still not sunny but dry. It was also very warm, quite humid in fact.
We had a look at the beach before we left, Biloxi has a great beach and looks a nice place. Hopefully we'll be back here again some day.
We had a stop at an outlet centre to do some shopping. It was very quiet on the centre, quite humid as well. We had a great time, Sandra bought some stuff in Michael Kors, got some trainers from Nike, whilst I got some tops from Under Armour and loafers from G.W. Bass.
The credit card took a right bashing!
We had lunch and then made our way towards New Orleans. We stopped at the Louisiana Welcome Centre where we spoke to Rose, she was so helpful, giving us directions to our hotel and lots of ideas as to what to see and di in town.
The drive into New Orleans was real easy, well sign posted, so we didn't have too much trouble finding our way. The only issue wa due to building works we had to drive round the block to get to the hotel.
We valet parked the car, speaking to a real nice guy called Gary, and checked in. Our room was a deluxe suite with 2 King size beds in 2 rooms. Sergio, the desk clerk, asked if we needed that much space and we changed our rooms to 1 King size room with a sitting room area. We were located on the 10th floor, room was really great and very spacious.
We took the opportunity to get some washing done and whilst that was doing we had a few beers in the bar!
Sergio had recommended a couple of restaurants to eat in, so after the washing was done and put away, we showered, got ready and hit New Orleans.
This is one party town! Bourbon St is only 1 block from where we are staying and as we walked to the restaurant we had decided to eat in it was manic.
We had chosen a micro brewery restaurant called Cresent City Brewery on Decateur St. Our server wax Pam, I chose ribs, Sandra had jambalaya. The food was really nice, good portions. There was a real nice feel about the place. They brew all their own beers, I had a Pilsner which wa very tasty.
We walked back to Bourbon St and it was crazy! It is pedestrianised of an evening, so no traffic. Just as well because there were loads of people around. They were mostly drunk, nearly all wearing Mardi Gras beads and all wandering from bar to bar. Lots of bars were playing music, however, not too many playing trad jazz. We eventually found Fritzel's. Only a small bar but a really good jazz band. They payed traditional jazz songs.
The waitress was a bit dim, we asked for vodka Diet Coke and a beer, and she brought us 3 drinks! I think that was because we had to explain to her what we wanted. She told us we could have the 3rd drink for free.When she asked for the money there was no please or thank you, so no tip.
We stayed for about an hour, had a couple of drinks, Sandra got chatting to a German couple and a group of guys from Ohio.
The walk back along Bourbon St was interesting, a few "trannies", hookers and lots and lots of gays. Hustlers everywhere, nutters in abundance and nearly everyone else was drunk or stoned!
I'm sure there is more to New Orleans than Bourbon St. This street is a bit sleazy!
Back to the hotel to update the blog and get some sleep.
